Why is it that the PS3 is the greatest challenge Sony has to face since the indtroduction of the original playstation.
Back then it was in a market solely dominated by Nintendo's SNES and Sega with the newly introduced Saturn console.
While Sega was already falling behind through introducing to many systems in short time :Megadrive,Megadrive CD,32X and the Saturn.
Sony was facing an difficult market but stand tall by introducing great software and great artwork.
But let's not forget that the machine was very costly at that time I was selling them for € 375,00.
Now the time has come the opposition is harder than ever before and in my opinion Sony makes a clear mistake.
Do not sell the consumer what they want but sell them whet we want them to have.
And therefore giving it such an steep pricetag.
One of the great advantages Microsoft has is they are not depending on the sales of software.
Their main goal is thet synergy between your home computer and their Live system.
Sony on the other hand is by their linkage to Columbia/BMG and SCEE forced to make what the software developers want you to have.
The price of the Playstation3 is mainly caused because the DVD sales aren't meeting their revenue goals.
Why?
Simply the price of the DVD has reached the absolute bottom in such a comptetive market.
Raising the price is not an option because the danger of illegal downloads is very dominant.
So if you want to make more profit on your product you have to make the consumer use new technology.
But the consumer doesn't need new technology, he is far from ready to buy a € 1000.- costing Blu Ray or HD DVD player.
Sure there are enough freaks out there that will buy new technology but they are such a small percentage of the market, that they will never be enough to make an introduction af new software (Blu Ray DVD or HD DVD) worth while.
So waht to do make an PS 3 with the Blu Ray technology (the games won't need it immediately) and your market for introducing € 20.- costing Blu Ray DVD's is imminent.
Look just at the line up of games they showed hardly anything you can not play on your XBOX 360 with the so called "limited technology".
NO they are fighting a war they must win beacuse they computer firms are all supporting Microsoft in their HD DVD camp.
What are we facing?
Your movie on three separate disc versions and an overprized entertainment system they use to let you buy their movies.
Let's all wait a year and look how well defendable the pricetag was.
